August heat hangs in there

August continues its string of warm days today, but forecasters said they see a cold front on the horizon for Wednesday. But this cold front is likely to bring only some clouds and light winds to the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene areas. Locations near the mountains and along the Canadian border could see a chance of isolated and widely scattered showers or thunderstorms on Wednesday with precipitation chances possible as far south as U.S. Highway 2 in the Columbia Basin. Otherwise, sunshine will continue through today. Today’s highs are likely to reach the middle and upper 80s, with 86 at expected at Spokane International Airport, 88 in downtown Spokane and 89 in Colville. A low-pressure area off the coast of British Columbia is expected to send a trailing cold front inland with the front brushing the northern portions of Washington. Breezy winds in the Columbia Basin could pose a fire hazard there. Temperatures will drop to the low 80s for a break in the heat on Wednesday and Thursday in the Spokane area. A system of higher air pressure rebuilds at the end of the week, allowing for highs to return to the upper 80s and lower 90s on Saturday and Sunday. At 7 a.m., it was 57 at the Spokane airport, 59 at Felts Field, 61 in Coeur d’Alene and 52 at Deer Park.
