Rangers make short work of M’s pitchers in romp

ARLINGTON, Texas – The first sign this wasn’t going to be Charlie Furbush’s night came when his opening pitch of the game sailed wide of his catcher’s glove.

It wasn’t quite the much-remembered Charlie Sheen scene out of “Major League.” Then again, there wasn’t much major league about any of this 9-2 loss to the Texas Rangers on Monday, a score that actually flattered the visitors given how much worse things could have been.

Texas teed off on Furbush and the bullpen in a three-run fifth inning in which first baseman Mike Carp probably stopped the Rangers from doubling that total with a brilliant snag of a screaming liner with the bases loaded and none out. Carp saved his team from a three-run double with the catch, then stepped on his bag for the double play in an inning that ended shortly after.

But the suspense was all done at that point for 27,771 fans at Rangers Ballpark, who watched the home side pile up 15 hits. Furbush gave up eight of those in just four-plus innings, including a long home run by Nelson Cruz that opened the scoring in the second.

Texas was up 2-0 when Jack Wilson hit a two-run double to tie it in the third. But the Rangers came right back, loading the bases with none out in the fourth and then scoring on a pair of ground outs. They put things away in the fifth inning after two Furbush walks sandwiched around a single once again loaded the bases with nobody out and brought Jamey Wright into the game.

Wright was no better than Furbush, yielding a pair of singles to bring two runs home and then a walk that forced in another run to make it 7-2. Carp then saved Wright and his team further embarrassment with his double-play turn on the line drive, but the Rangers scored two runs on a double by Cruz and single by Mike Napoli off Tom Wilhelmsen in the sixth.

The Mariners have not won a series against an American League team other than Oakland in more than two months.

• The M’s placed SS Brendan Ryan on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder injury. Infielder Luis Rodriguez was called up from Triple-A Tacoma.

• Texas placed left-hander Arthur Rhodes on release waivers. He becomes a free agent on Wednesday.

Reyes on DL

The New York Mets have put star shortstop Jose Reyes on the disabled list with another hamstring problem and say infielder Daniel Murphy is likely done for the season because of a knee injury.

Both players were hurt Sunday.

Reyes left in the second inning because of stiffness in his left hamstring. Murphy left in the seventh inning with a sprained ligament in his left knee.

Victorino appeals

Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino is appealing a three-game suspension imposed for his part in a weekend brawl at San Francisco.

Major League Baseball also fined Victorino an undisclosed amount.

Giants right fielder Carlos Beltran was out of the lineup for Monday night’s series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates because of an injured right hand. … Third baseman Chase Headley was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken left pinkie, leaving the punchless San Diego Padres without their most productive hitter. … Cleveland has placed starter Carlos Carrasco on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow, voiding his six-game suspension.
