Tanker truck spills oil near Springdale

Emergency crews this morning were cleaning up a ditch near Springdale in Stevens County after a tanker truck crashed on state Highway 231. The accident punched a hole in an oil tank, causing the oil to leak into the ditch alongside the highway, but the spill was apparently contained there, according to the Washington State Patrol. The oil was not flammable and was described as emulsion oil. The truck driver summoned another truck and pump to remove the remaining oil, and the hole was plugged to slow the spill three miles north of Springdale. The accident occurred about 4:30 a.m., the WSP said.
