August brings the end of summer ball games

Thu., Aug. 11, 2011

Tournament champions were determined the final weekend of July as summer youth baseball and softball came to an end in Spokane Valley.

The playoffs proved unkind to Spokane Valley Baseball Midget League top seeds when sixth-seeded Jim Frazier Trophies and Awards from Pasadena Park swept four games, including 10-5 over fourth-seeded Chester II for the title.

The top three seeds were all beaten in their tourney openers.

Ryan Leifer hit a double and home run as one of three players to go 2-for-4 in the championship game. Cruz Bale, who tripled, and Chance Halstead were the others.

Team members on the Keith-Leifer-coached team are Leifer, Bale, Halstead, Mark Oestreich, Aidan Clark, Max Johnson, Chase Johnston, Josh Ryder, Thomas Standiford, Logan Steinman, Nathan Thompson, Weston Warren and Gabe Pipkin.

All three PeeWee League unbeatens reached the semifinals of their tournament where Tom’s Barber Shop from Broadway edged Sterling Self Storage (McDonald) 5-3 in a taut showdown.

But Evergreen Cosmetic Dentistry from Ponderosa capped a 15-0 season by beating Tom’s Barber Shop 8-2 for the championship. Pitchers Bryce Harris and Brett Lakey combined for 12 strikeouts. Kaleb Ramelow was 3-for-3 and Clayton Murock had two hits including a triple.

Coached by Jeff Hood, others on the roster are Richard Austing, Ashton Beach, Kyle Bennett, Isaiah Gessner, Travis Hood, Braydon O’Neal and Keyson Wallick.

Top-seed STCU swept through the 18U Spokane Valley Girls Softball tournament, beating fourth-seeded Home Run Construction in the title game to complete a 14-0 season.

Upset in its 14U tourney opener, fourth-seeded Blue Rhino, 6-4 during the regular season, rallied for six straight wins, including 6-4 and 6-5 over third-seed Megawash in the title games of the double-elimination event.

Ameristar Meats, second during regular season, went unbeaten in the tournament to finish 13-1 overall in the 12U tournament while handing Evergreen Family Dentistry (13-2) its only two defeats of the season. Included was a 12-3 win for the championship.

Same occurred in the 10U tourney where MIST (13-1 overall) topped previously unbeaten Quality Roofing (13-2) twice, including 27-10 for the crown.
