Idaho offense shines
Unit scores 7 TDs in 2-hour scrimmage
MOSCOW, Idaho – It was the Brian Reader Show Monday afternoon at the Kibbie Dome.
Or rather, Brian Reader and Mike Scott and Kama Bailey and Troy Vital and Armauni Johnson and the entirety of the line as the Idaho offense took command of the two-hour session to the tune of seven touchdowns and a field goal.
Yet, they weren’t the only Vandal offensive players making an impression. Preston Davis hauled in two passes for 53 yards and Ryan Bass showed his explosive speed to add to the afternoon fireworks.
“Our offense whipped tail today,” coach Robb Akey said. “I’m happy with the production I saw there.”
Key to the offensive success was the same-page mentality of Reader and his receiving corps combined with the time to make it happen. When the numbers were totaled, Reader had connected on 13 of 15 passes for 162 yards and three TDs.
Scott was on the receiving end of two of those while Johnson was the numbers leader with four catches.
“At first, I was trying to figure out my role on the team,” said Scott, an August addition to the roster after playing two seasons at Foothills College. “It’s definitely a good feeling to know we’re on the same page.”
Reader tipped his helmet not just to Scott but to all the offensive players.
“Every practice your goal is to stay consistent within your offense,”
Reader said. “You can’t thank the line enough. That and just getting on the same page as your receivers.”
Linebackers Conrad Scheidt and Tre`Shawn Robinson were the defensive leaders with Scheidt in on five tackles and Robinson four. Each had a tackle for loss as the defense totaled nine.
