Roller wins golf event

Stephen Roller of Hayden captured first place in the 2011 Idaho Golf Association Junior State championships in the boys 15-year-old division.

Roller fired rounds of 69 and 77 at Banbury Golf Club in Eagle on Aug. 8-9 to finish at 4-over-par to edge Derek Bayley of Rathdrum by a stroke. Bayley, who was penalized a stroke the first day for slow play, shot rounds of 74 and 73.

Trevor Fedele of Post Falls took third with a pair of 76s.

In the boys 16-year-old division, Kyle Kaufman of Coeur d’Alene took fifth with rounds of 74 and 79 to finish two strokes out of first. Michael Porter of CdA tied for seventh (81/74).

In the boys 14-year-old division, Michael Brufocao of Spokane tied for third with rounds of 74 and 80 – two strokes out of first.

In the girls 15-year-old division, Amy Hasenoehrl of Lewiston shot 1-over with rounds of 73 and 70 to finish first.

In the girls 16-19 division, Kaceelyn Pouttu of Kellogg took third, firing rounds of 75 and 73. Kati Greear of Moscow was fifth (75/74), Taylor Anderson of Moscow was ninth (81/76) and Chelsea Bayley of Rathdrum was 11th (80/79).

Girls basketball

The Spokane Stars took 12th out of 26 teams in Division 1 at the fourth-grade AAU national championships Aug. 2-6 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fla.

Team members included Mady Simmelink, Anna Reeves, Ashley Shurtleff, Kaylee Bishop, Sam Hampton, Kate Sams, Quincy McDeid and Christelle Simpson. Ryan Bishop was head coach and he was assisted by Derek Simmelink and Sareya Bishop.
