Former Ohio State coach Tressel visits Browns camp
His hands clasped behind his back in a familiar pose, Jim Tressel was back on a football sideline.
Just no longer as a coach.
Ousted at scandal-ridden Ohio State and without a team to lead and teach for the first time in 25 years, Tressel visited Cleveland’s training camp at Berea, Ohio, where he intently watched practice, spent time with new Browns coach Pat Shurmur and quarterback Colt McCoy – and even reminisced with former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr.
As he left the Browns’ facility Tuesday, driving a scarlet Mustang convertible with a gray pinstripe that included a few Ohio State block Os, Tressel was asked if he would consider an NFL consulting job.
“Not right now,” he said. “I’m a fan. Always been a Browns fan.”
Dressed casually in a golf shirt, shorts and baseball cap, Tressel spent most of the 2-hour-plus workout standing near midfield and watched as the Browns went through their drills.
Tressel and Carr stayed about 25 yards apart during practice.
Police charge Lewis
Police used a stun gun on former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Jermaine Lewis and charged him with resisting arrest after a traffic accident Monday evening in Baltimore County.
An officer responding to calls about a Dodge Charger that was weaving on roads in the Reisterstown area and hit the Boring Volunteer Fire Department’s sign without stopping went to Lewis’ Reisterstown home where the car was parked, according to Baltimore County charging documents.
The officer found Lewis lying on the couch with his shorts halfway down to his knees and noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from Lewis, charging documents state. The officer questioned Lewis about the crash and documents state Lewis responded that he had hit a sign but didn’t hurt anybody.
Giants re-sign Grant
Veteran safety Deon Grant re-signed with the New York Giants.
The 32-year-old, who started eight games last year in his first season with New York, was back at training camp at East Rutherford, N.J., after getting a call from the team the day before.
Grant, who became a free agent after last season, said other teams called his agent in recent weeks. But he felt that he would return to the Giants at some point.
Grant finished with 68 tackles, three interceptions and two forced fumbles.
Grant played with the Seattle Seahawks from 2007-09.

Cincinnati released defensive tackle Tank Johnson, who missed nine games last season with a knee injury. Johnson was in his third season with the Bengals, who gave him a $2 million signing bonus as part of a four-year deal. … Green Bay Packers defensive end Mike Neal injured his left knee during a non-contact drill. … New York Jets offensive lineman Robert Turner has a broken right leg and will have surgery this week.
