In brief: Fall plant sale preview Saturday
MANITO/CANNON HILL – The Friends of Manito will have a free preview for the annual fall plant sale on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Manito meeting room.
The preview will offer a discussion about plants that attract hummingbirds, and plants that bloom the longest. The event also will showcase in drought-tolerant plants and plants that can give gardens multiple seasons of interest with colorful foliage, flowers, berries or seed heads.
Space is limited and reservations are recommended.
The sale will be Aug. 27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the parking lot east of the Manito Park Gaiser Conservatory. More than 20,000 plants in nearly 400 species will be available.

Barbecue, music set for Tuesday
EMERSON/GARFIELD – The Women’s and Children’s Free Restaurant, 1620 N. Monroe St., will hold a free community barbecue on Tuesday, from 3 to 6 p.m.
The event will include barbecue favorites such as hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, salad and watermelon, as well as crafts and activities for kids and live music, featuring the Sammy Eubanks Band.

Signup under way for Dwight Dash
NORTHWEST – The Dwight Dash 2011, a 5k or 10k urban trail run, including dirt and paved trails, is set for Aug. 27 at Dwight Merkel Sports Complex, 5701 N. Assembly St.
Check-in starts at 7:45 a.m. The 5k race will begin at 9 a.m., and the 10k at 9:30 a.m.
Cost is $19 through Wednesday. The late entry fee is $29.
