Police: Boys playing with matches started Kellogg fire

By The Spokesman-Review

Two young boys started a 17-acre fire in Kellogg this week, officials announced today.

The boys, ages 9 and 10, were identified after citizens reported seeing two young children running from the scene of the blaze on Wednesday.

The boys confessed to starting the fire while playing with matches on the hillside, said Kellogg Police Chief Dave Wuolle.

The fire burned close to homes and the gondola at Silver Mountain Resort and caused great concern in the community, Wuolle said.

“It took the community to help solve this,” Wuolle said.

The state fire marshal, U.S. Forest Service and Idaho Department of Lands assisted in the investigation.

Police will send the case to the Shoshone County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if criminal charges are warranted.
