Vandals secure tie with Gauchos at Las Vegas

Sophomore transfer Bailey Hewitt scored to tie the match in the first half, senior Liz Boyden made a school-record 14 saves, and Idaho held on for a 1-1 tie with UC Santa Barbara in triple-digit heat Friday at the Rebel Classic in Las Vegas.

The Gauchos of UCSB outshot the Vandals 29-7 overall and 15-3 on goal and had a 9-0 advantage on corner kicks, but UI made its way to the tie.

Hewitt scored off a cross from Erica Hart at 18:27.

Illinois 5, Gonzaga 1: Vanessa DiBernardo scored two goals in leading the 24th-ranked Illini to a victory over the Bulldogs in a season opener in Champaign, Ill.

Tori Lee put in a header inside the box after taking a pass from Katey Pennington for Gonzaga’s lone goal to make it 3-1 at 62:32.

Florida Gulf Coast 4, Eastern Washington 1: The hosts from Fort Myers, Fla., scored two goals in each half to down the Eagles in an opener.

Siara Byers scored EWU’s lone goal to tie the match at 27:26 when she put in a deflected shot.
