Hottest day of the year expected Sunday

The hottest temperatures of the year are expected this weekend in advance of cooler weather starting next week. The National Weather Service is calling for a high of 95 in downtown Spokane and 96 in Coeur d’Alene on Sunday. Today’s high of 93 at Spokane International Airport was the hottest day of the year so far. Higher air pressure is dominating the weather over the Inland Northwest this weekend with a low pressure area off the coast of California coast, which is helping push hot air northward. Temperature records are not likely to be set on Sunday, forecasters said. The record high for today was 98 in 1929, and the record for Sunday was 99, also in 1929. Cooler air is forecast to migrate into the region starting on Tuesday. Highs will be in the upper 80s on Monday, dropping to the lower 80s on Tuesday and then the 70s by Wednesday. Lows will go from the lower 60s to the 50s on Monday and Tuesday to the upper 40s by Wednesday night.
