Portland women blank Washington State in nonconference soccer match

Amanda Frisbee scored in the 65th minute for the match’s only goal as fourth-ranked Portland downed visiting Washington State 1-0 in a nonconference women’s soccer match played before 4,402 on Friday night.

The best chance for the Cougars (1-1-0) came soon after, when a shot from the top of the box by Jocelyn Jeffers at the 69th minute was just wide.

The Pilots (2-0-0) scored when Micaela Capelle came up with a turnover near midfield and sent a pass to Frisbee, who beat WSU goalkeeper Gurveen Clair from 12 yards.

• Sarah Rhodes scored two goals in the second half as Gonzaga rallied for a 2-1 victory over Air Force Academy at the Bronco Invite in Boise. It was the Bulldogs’ first win after two losses. Rhodes headed in a long throw-in from Morgan Manchester at 57:53 and gave the Bulldogs the lead at 72:15 with a shot from 20 yards that went inside the left post.

• Host Boise State (1-2-0) rallied from a one-goal halftime deficit to defeat Eastern Washington (0-3) in the Bronco Invite. Cassie Black scored for the Eagles in the 41st minute. Boise tied the match at 57:00 and went ahead on a goal from Lauren Hickok, who got behind the EWU back line, collected a long punt from Broncos goalie Liz Ruiz and scored from 12 yards out.

• Idaho (0-1-2) came close several times, but it was Seattle (3-0-0) that scored the lone goal in the Vandals’ 1-0 loss at home. Megan Daniels scored the only goal from a long shot outside the box at 31:23.

Volleyball

Idaho held on for a five-set victory over Butler in the season opener for both teams at the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Senior blocker Rylee Walker led the way in the 25-21, 25-14, 21-25, 22-25, 15-11 win with a career-high 14 kills and a match-high hitting percentage of .565. Outside hitter Allison Walker added 20 kills and 11 digs.

• Eastern Washington fell 25-21, 25-18, 25-19 in its season opener at the Seattle University Fall Volley Tournament as 21 errors were the Eagles’ undoing. Senior Chenoa Rossi-Childress lead the Eagles with 10 kills and only three errors on 20 attempts.

• Gonzaga won its season opener 25-22, 25-29, 22-25, 25-18 over South Dakota in the Bulldogs’ first match of the Wyoming Invite in Laramie. Senior setter Denise Van de Mortel led the way as she was credited with 36 assists on 41 GU kills. Kylie Edinger and Terran Poindexter had 17 kills apiece.

The Bulldogs lost their second match to host Wyoming, 25-11, 25-20, 25-18, hitting minus-.062 with 31 errors.

• North Idaho College split its first two matches of the season on the first day of the Buffalo Wild Wings/Hiley Poly Invitational in Twin Falls, Idaho. The Cardinals lost 28-26, 23-25, 25-18, 28-30, 15-12 to Northwest College but swept Casper 25-6, 25-13, 25-11.
