Pray in private

Re: “Praying outside the limelight” (Aug. 18, 2011). Although Stefanie Pettit might cringe, a hearty “amen!” to her column on prayer. I, too, cringe at athletes who point to the sky when they score touchdowns and politicians who hold prayer rallies in stadiums.

What puzzles me is that these folks who publicly display their piety seem to have forgotten this fairly clear instruction from Jesus: “But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door.” (Matthew 6:6).
