Arrested Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton, who was suspended from the league for having guns in a locker room with teammate Gilbert Arenas, was arrested Monday in Southern California to face a murder charge in a deadly Atlanta shooting, an attorney said. Crittenton was taken into custody at about 8 p.m. at John Wayne Airport in Orange County after checking in for a Delta Air Lines flight to Atlanta, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.

Signed Denver uggets restricted free agent Wilson Chandler has signed to play in China this season and won’t be able to opt out of his deal and return to the NBA if there is a 2011-12 season. Chandler’s agent, Chris Luchey, told the AP his client will play for Zhejiang Guangsha of the Chinese Basketball Association. Out Boise State coach Chris Petersen says running back Malcolm Johnson will be out the entire season after tearing an ACL during no-contact drills.

Announced Junior Garrett Gilbert, who threw 17 interceptions as Texas went 5-7 last season was announced as the starter for the Longhorns’ season opener Saturday night at home against Rice. Gilbert won a four-way battle for the job in new coordinator Bryan Harsin’s offense. The Longhorns threw the position open after Texas had one of its worst offensive seasons in 20 years in 2010 and Gilbert wound up throwing for just 10 touchdowns. Suspended Two Hawaii starters have been suspended for Saturday’s season opener at home against Colorado after they were arrested on charges of misdemeanor assault stemming from a weekend brawl at a Waikiki nightclub, University of Hawaii officials announced. Outside linebacker Aaron Brown and receiver Darius Bright were arrested in the early hours Sunday following a fight at Zanzabar Nightclub. They were both released after posting bail.

Extended San Diego State coach Steve Fisher has received a four-year contract extension and long-time assistant Brian Dutcher has been designated as his eventual replacement. It could keep Fisher at SDSU through the 2014-15 season, if he wants to serve it out. The 66-year-old Fisher has turned what had been a sad-sack program into a consistent winner. Postponed The Portland Timbers at D.C. United game postponed by Hurricane Irene will be made up on Oct. 19. The game originally was scheduled for Saturday, but it was postponed by MLS.

Reacquired The Phoenix Coyotes have reacquired Daymond Langkow in a trade sending right wing Lee Stempniak to the Calgary Flames.
