In brief: Tree lighting tonight in Cheney

HENEY – The residents of Cheney are invited to the annual tree lighting ceremony and winterfest activities, beginning tonight at 5:30 p.m. at the Cheney Library, at First and D streets.

Santa will make an appearance on the Cheney Fire Department truck. The Cheney Youth Commission will serve hot cocoa to those who brave the cold for the occasion, Mayor Tom Trulove will read the holiday proclamation and the tree lighting ceremony will mark the beginning of the Christmas season.

On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., shoppers can look for Christmas gifts at the arts and crafts bazaar at Cheney High School, 460 N. Sixth St.

Santa to ride with firefighters Dec. 17

CHENEY – Cheney firefighters will spread holiday cheer through Cheney neighborhoods with Santa on Dec. 17 during the annual candy cane hayride, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Firefighters will hand out candy canes while Santa says hello to local residents. The group also will be collecting nonperishable food items for the Cheney food bank.

Santa will begin his ride in the Salnave area. Around 6 p.m., he’ll head toward the north end of town and make a short stop at the Safeway complex about 7:15 p.m. For more information about the hayride visit the fire department’s website at www.cityofcheney. org/fire.
