‘Idiot Brother’ brings mindless fun to DVD

Philadelphia Inquirer

Available this week on DVD:

“Our Idiot Brother”– Paul Rudd has the title role as a guileless good guy whose inescapable well-meaningness creates problems for all the friends and family in his orbit. Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel and Emily Mortimer play his exasperated sisters. (1:30, rated R for sexual content including nudity, and for language throughout) • • •

“One Day” – Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess star as the friends who wrestle with the not uninteresting question of whether friendship is the barrier to love or the basis of it. David Nicholls adapted his novel that looks in on his protagonists once a year between 1988 and 2006. (1:47, Rated PG-13 for sexual content, partial nudity, language, some violence and substance abuse) • •

“The Smurfs” – When an evil wizard chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world into ours. (1:42, PG for some mild rude humor and action)

“Cave of Forgotten Dreams” – Werner Herzog ventures into southern France’s Chauvet caves, sealed for eons by a rockfall and only discovered in 1994, which turn out to house humankind’s first art gallery: paintings of horses and mammoths, lions and reindeer, put there some 32,000 years ago by a budding Picasso or two. Amazing. (1:30, G) • • • 1/2

“Friends With Benefits” – Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis are a hot and happening dude and dudette who’ve maxed out on bad relationships and messy breakups. They like each other, a lot. And they’re attracted to each other, a lot. So, they make a pact: sex, yes. Commitment, never. See how long that lasts. (2:00, R for sexual content and language) • • ½

“30 Minutes or Less” – A hazy action comedy about a pizza delivery guy (Jesse Eisenberg) forced to rob a bank, or else the bomb he’s got strapped to his chest will detonate. With crash-and-burn car chases and some unexpectedly dark turns, the film is undermined by a surfeit of sloppy R-rated jokes and stupid-with-a-capital-S comedy. Aziz Ansari and Danny McBride co-star. (1:23, R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, nudity and some violence) • •

Also available: “Smallville: The Complete Series,” “Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas Special,” “The Six Million Dollar Man: Season 1,” “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.”
