Montana teams post sweep in playoffs
DeNarius McGhee ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third Saturday as Montana State overcame four turnovers and rode a missed extra point with 7 seconds remaining to a 26-25 victory over New Hampshire at Bozeman in the second round of the FCS playoffs.
MSU (10-2) seemed to have the game put away when Darius Jones intercepted a Mark Becker pass at the Bobcats’ 3-yard line with 1:16 to play and the Bobcats leading 26-19.
But a shanked punt gave the Wildcats (8-4) the ball back with 17 seconds left, and Becker hit Justin Mello on a 29-yard scoring pass with 7 seconds to play. Mike MacArthur hit the right upright with his extra-point attempt, sending Montana State into the quarterfinals against Sam Houston State, which defeated Stony Brook 34-27 on Saturday.
Montana 41, Central Arkansas 14: Turnovers helped Central Arkansas win nine games this season, but they cost the Bears dearly in a loss to the fifth-ranked Grizzlies in the second round of the playoffs at Missoula.
The Grizzlies (10-2) held Central Arkansas to 25 yards rushing, turned three first-quarter turnovers into 17 points and pulled away to a 38-0 lead before the Bears scored late.
The Grizzlies won their eighth straight game after a 2-2 start.
“It’s a beautiful thing to be hitting on all cylinders right now,” said Montana receiver Jabin Sambrano, who caught two first-half touchdown passes from Jordan Johnson.
Jordan Canada ran for two scores for UM, which led 31-0 by halftime.
Montana will host Northern Iowa in the quarterfinals.
