Top 25: Oklahoma St. makes case for BCS title consideration

A dominating performance made Oklahoma State a conference champion for the first time in decades. Now, the Cowboys want a shot at an even bigger title.

Joseph Randle ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns, Richetti Jones returned a fumble for a score and No. 3 Oklahoma State throttled No. 13 Oklahoma 44-10 Saturday night at Stillwater, Okla., to win the Big 12 championship and make its case to play for the BCS national title.

The Cowboys (11-1, 8-1 Big 12) snapped an eight-game losing streak in the Bedlam rivalry and won their first outright conference title since 1948 in the three-team Missouri Valley. Oklahoma is 9-3, 6-3.

Oklahoma State’s defense, badmouthed much of the season while giving up big yardage but leading the nation in takeaways, forced the Sooners into five turnovers – four of them by quarterback Landry Jones.

Fans started chanting “L-S-U!” midway through the fourth quarter with the victory well in hand, then stormed the field and tore down the goal posts when it was over.

While the top-ranked Tigers won the SEC championship Saturday to lock up a spot in the BCS title game, No. 2 Alabama sat at home idle after finishing second in its division.

(16) Kansas State 30, Iowa State 23: Bill Snyder wouldn’t bite when he was asked to compare this season’s Kansas State team to those of years past, Wildcats that won Big 12 championships and went to prestigious bowl games.

“I reserve the right to make those judgments until the end of the season,” the longtime coach said, “and then I’ll find a way to avoid the question.”

It’s going to be an inevitable one.

John Hubert ran for 120 yards and the go-ahead touchdown, helping the Wildcats (10-2, 7-2 Big 12) past the Cyclones (6-6, 3-6) at Manhattan, Kan.

(18) TCU 56, UNLV 9: Greg McCoy returned a kickoff 99 yards and Kris Gardner had a 16-yard interception return for a touchdown in a 12-second span, and the Horned Frogs (10-2, 7-0 Mountain West Conference) could bust into the BCS again after a rout over the Rebels (2-10, 1-6) at Fort Worth, Texas.

TCU wrapped up its third consecutive outright MWC title, winning its last 24 games in that conference before moving to the Big 12 next season.

(19) Baylor 48, Texas 24: Robert Griffin III ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more to lead the Bears (9-3, 6-3 Big 12) past the Longhorns (7-5, 4-5) at Waco, Texas, capping Baylor’s best regular season in 25 years and perhaps doing enough to persuade Heisman Trophy voters he’s the best player in college football.
