In brief: Air crash kills four occupants

SILVERTON, Colo. – All four people aboard a small plane were killed when it crashed in the southwest Colorado mountains, authorities said Sunday.

The single-engine plane was flying from Durango to Aspen when it crashed Saturday afternoon.

None of the victims’ names have been released, and the cause of the crash was unknown.

The plane crashed in a rugged, heavily forested area up to 11,000 feet above sea level, San Juan County Emergency Manager Kristina Maxfield said.

Plane wreckage found on shore

ST. IGNACE, Mich. – The U.S. Coast Guard says searchers have found the wreckage of a single-engine plane that crashed in northern Michigan, killing the two men on board.

The plane left St. Ignace in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on Saturday night, bound for Mackinac Island. Searchers found the wreckage Sunday afternoon on the Lake Huron shore, about three miles north of St. Ignace.

Michigan State Police identified the men on the plane as 52-year-old Thomas Phillips, who had homes in Kirkland, Wash., and Mackinac Island, and 29-year-old Joseph Pann Jr., of St. Ignace.

Federal Aviation Administration records show the plane was owned by charter company Great Lakes Air Inc.

Megachurch head to take sabbatical

LITHONIA, Ga. – Megachurch leader Bishop Eddie Long announced Sunday he’s taking time off to focus on his family after his wife filed for divorce.

Long’s spokesman, Art Franklin, said the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church leader told his congregation during church services that he will continue to serve as senior pastor at the church in Lithonia just outside Atlanta. But Long said he needs a sabbatical.

Long’s wife, Vanessa Long, filed a petition for divorce Thursday in DeKalb County Superior Court to end her 21-year marriage to the embattled minister.

The split comes more than a year after allegations last year that Eddie Long lured young men into sexual relationships.
