Long Beach St. gives scare to No. 13 Kansas

Men’s college basketball: Thomas Robinson had a career-high 26 points to go with 11 rebounds, Jeff Withey came within one blocked shot of a triple-double and No. 13 Kansas held off Long Beach State 88-80 on Tuesday night in Lawrence, Kan., after blowing a big first-half lead.

Connor Teahan also had a career-high 14 points for the Jayhawks (6-2), who established a 19-point lead on the Big West favorites in the first half before sloppy passes, senseless fouls and generally poor shooting allowed Long Beach State to climb back into the game.

T.J. Robinson had 19 points, and Ennis and Casper Ware each had 16 for the 49ers (4-4), who knocked off then-No. 6 Pittsburgh on the road, played then-No. 6 Louisville tough on the road and will visit fourth-ranked North Carolina on Saturday.

• Syracuse outlasts Marshall: Dion Waiters scored 15 points, Kris Joseph had 11 points and eight rebounds and No. 3 Syracuse continued to win amid a federal investigation, this time outlasting Marshall 62-56 at Syracuse, N.Y.

It was the third game for the Orange (9-0) since former associate head coach Bernie Fine was fired after allegations by three men that he sexually molested them as minors.

Dennis Tinnon had 17 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Thundering Herd (5-2).

Bonds’ lawyers ask judge for probation

Baseball: Lawyers for Barry Bonds asked a federal judge for probation when Major League Baseball’s career home run leader is sentenced for obstruction of justice later this month.

Bonds, 47, was convicted in April of obstructing a grand jury’s sports doping investigation with an evasive answer.

Federal sentencing guidelines for conviction on the charge recommend a prison sentence between 15 months and 21 months. But Bonds’ lawyers cited an investigative report prepared by a federal probation officer for the judge that also recommended a sentence of probation.

• Dykstra denied restraining order: Lenny Dykstra struck out in an attempt to get a restraining order against a man the former baseball player allowed to run his Twitter account and claims is now threatening his finances and freedom.

Dykstra’s attorney sought a restraining order against Daniel Herman, claiming the man has contacted federal prosecutors handling the ex-player’s embezzlement case and told them he is a flight risk. Dykstra also claimed Herman has posted racist and demeaning messages on Twitter and has falsely represented himself as his business manager.

• Mets make moves: People familiar with the deals say the New York Mets made a series of transactions, trading center fielder Angel Pagan to San Francisco and signing free-agent relievers Frank Francisco and Jon Rauch.

The Mets are getting outfielder Andres Torres and pitcher Ramon Ramirez for Pagan. The moves came at the winter meetings in Dallas.

Francisco is getting a $12 million, two-year contract while Rauch is receiving a one-year deal.

Bettman: Not enough data for CTE link

NHL: NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said there was not enough data yet to draw conclusions about the link between concussions and a degenerative brain ailment that has been found in four dead hockey players.

The league wrapped up its Board of Governors meetings in Pebble Beach, Calif., a day after the New York Times reported that former New York Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, an ailment related to Alzheimer’s disease.

Boogaard, 28, who died in May of an accidental overdose of alcohol and oxycodone, was found to have had CTE – the fourth former NHL player found to have CTE by Boston University’s Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy.

• Flames hold off ’Canes: Brendan Morrison had two goals and two assists, leading the Calgary Flames to a 7-6 victory over Carolina at Calgary, Alberta. The teams combined for seven goals in the third period, with three coming in the final three minutes.

• Jets end Bruins’ streak: Ondrej Pavelec made 39 saves and Bryan Little scored to help the Winnipeg Jets beat the visiting Boston Bruins.

The Bruins lost in regulation for the first time since Oct. 29, ending a 15-game stretch in which they earned 29 of a possible 30 points.

• Sedins pace Canucks’ rout of Avs: Daniel Sedin scored three times, with twin brother Henrik Sedin assisting on all three goals, as the Vancouver Canucks beat the Colorado Avalanche 6-0 at Vancouver, British Columbia, for their seventh victory in eight games.

No. 2 UConn women rout No. 8 A&M

Miscellany: Tiffany Hayes and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis each scored 14 points to help second-ranked Connecticut rout No. 8 Texas A&M 81-51 in the Jimmy V Classic in Hartford, Conn.

Kelly Faris added 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Huskies (8-0). Texas A&M (6-2) was coming off its first loss of the season, falling to then-No. 13 Purdue on Sunday.

• Ligety wins World Cup slalom: Ted Ligety turned in a blazing second run in frigid conditions to capture a World Cup giant slalom in Beaver Creek, Colo.

The three-time overall GS champion flew down the challenging Birds of Prey course in a combined time of 2 minutes, 40.01 seconds, beating Marcel Hirscher of Austria by 0.69 seconds. Kjetil Jansrud of Norway was third.
