Two arrested in late-night homicide

Spokane police have arrested two people in connection with a homicide in which the victim called to report that he’d been shot. When police arrived minutes later, the man was dead.
The victim, whose name hasn’t been released, lived in an apartment at 1328 W. Dean. He called police about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday and said he’d been shot and needed help.

Spokane police have arrested two people in connection with a homicide in which the victim called to report that he’d been shot. When police arrived minutes later, the man was dead.

The victim, whose name hasn’t been released, lived in an apartment at 1328 W. Dean. He called police about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday and said he’d been shot and needed help.

Major crimes detectives began searching for a couple, David C. McLaughlin, 21, Melinda R. Barrera, 31, who lived in a nearby apartment, police said in a news release. McLaughlin was arrested at 1004 E. Garland Ave., where detectives also served a search warrant.

Both McLaughlin and Barrera were booked into jail for second-degree murder.

Police allege the couple broke into the victim’s apartment and Barrera shot the man in the chest after McLaughlin assaulted him.

Barrera and McLaughlin have been booked into Spokane County Jail and are facing second degree murder charges.

The medical examiner’s office is conducting an autopsy on the victim, who is identified only as a white male in his 30s. His identity will be released once family members have been notified, police say.
