Spokane family of four displaced by fire

A family of four was displaced from their home after a fire tore through a second-story bedroom in their house tonight. No injuries were reported in the 5:12 p.m. fire at 729 East Broad Avenue, but one pet rat did perish in the blaze, a fire official said. Crews rescued one cat, but several cats and a dog are still unaccounted for. The bedroom sustained significant fire and smoke damage, and there is also smoke damage throughout the house. An investigator is on scene trying to determine the cause of the fire. Avista also responded to shut down the home’s gas line as a precautionary measure. About 25 firefighters responded and the fire was knocked down in about 10 minutes. Crews said the family owned the home and have insurance.
