Sentenced Detroit Pistons center Ben Wallace was sentenced in Pontiac, Mich., to a year of probation but avoided jail time on drunken driving and gun possession charges that stemmed from a September traffic stop.

• Former NHL player Matthew Barnaby avoided jail time and potential deportation to Canada by pleading guilty to four violations related to the Dec. 5 drunken- driving arrest in Clarence Center, N.Y., that got him fired from his job as an analyst on ESPN. Barnaby was sentenced to 100 hours of community service, alcohol abuse counseling and $1,950 in fines.

Awarded Serbia’s Novak Djokovic capped an incredible season with the ITF World Champion award, becoming the first player other than Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to win since 2003. Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic won the women’s award, while American twins Bob and Mike Bryan were picked in doubles for the eighth time.

Introduced Colorado State introduced Jim McElwain as its new head coach. McElwain, Alabama’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and a former assistant at Eastern Washington University, becomes Colorado State’s 20th head coach. Athletic director Jack Graham said McElwain’s five-year contract includes an annual base salary of $1.35 million.

Arrested Kansas freshman Ben McLemore was arrested in Lawrence, Kan., after missing a Dec. 6 court appearance to answer a citation for underage possession of alcohol. McLemore was ruled a partial qualifier this season, which means he isn’t eligible to compete in games but can practice with the team.

• Retired NBA point guard Kenny Anderson was charged in Miramar, Fla., with leaving the scene of an accident, police said. Anderson, 41, was arrested late Sunday after crashing into two trees and walking away.

Surgery Australian triple Olympic champion Stephanie Rice has undergone shoulder surgery in a setback to her plans to defend her three swimming gold medals at the 2012 Olympics.

Announced Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn is set to become the next coach at Arkansas State, a person familiar with the negotiations confirmed.
