Education Notes: Students hold fundraiser for burn victim
Students at Madison Elementary School showed how much they care for classmate Snezhana Dedkov by competing against one another to raise money for her.
In October, Snezhana was in an accident that left her severely burned, and she’s been at the burn unit at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, her parents by her side. Recently she was moved to Seattle’s Children’s Hospital.
To help Dedkov and her parents, her friends at Madison began a penny drive. The classrooms’ fun, friendly fundraising competition raised $1,141.29. A nearby Little Caesars donated pizzas to the winning class for a little extra motivation.
The Madison staff also has set up a fund at Spokane Teachers Credit Union. Donations can be made at any STCU branch.
LC DECA students holding food drive
Lewis and Clark High School DECA students will continue to spread goodwill through Friday with the Do Your Part @ Hart food drive.
The goal is 5,000 pounds of nonperishable food to be donated to local food banks. The bins are still needing to be filled. To make a contribution of canned food, dry cereal, soup, rice or pasta, stop by LC’s office, 541 W. Fourth Ave.

34 teachers achieve board certification
Spokane Public Schools announced 34 new National Board Certified teachers. The teachers are among the 945 Washington teachers who achieved National Board Certification in 2011.

A press release from Spokane Public Schools said Washington ranked second nationwide in the number of new National Board Certified Teachers this year. Completion of the certification process signifies that teachers have developed and demonstrated the skills required of an accomplished education professional. National Board Certification is achieved through performance-based assessment and testing that takes one to three years to complete.
