Vandals lose at Wright State in overtime

DAYTON, Ohio – Julius Mays scored 28 points, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime, sealing Wright State’s 80-78 men’s basketball win over Idaho on Tuesday night.

Mays’ big shot marked the last of four lead changes in the final 21 seconds of overtime, and came just a moment after Dazmond Starke’s layup put the Vandals up 78-77 with just 4 seconds remaining.

Mays scored six of the Raiders’ 11 points in OT.

The Raiders (5-8) outscored the Vandals 11-9 in overtime.

Wright State outscored Idaho 37-36 in the second half, but couldn’t close the Vandals out thanks to Landon Tatum’s half-court 3-point bank shot at the buzzer that sent the contest into overtime.

Kyle Barone had a double-double to lead Idaho (7-5), scoring a season-high 21 points and a career-best 14 rebounds. Tatum tied his career best with eight assists.

Idaho led 33-32 at halftime.

The loss ended Idaho’s three-game winning streak.

“It sure would have been nice to get out of here with a win,” Idaho head coach Don Verlin said after the game. “We just didn’t make the free throws we needed to make to win the game.”

The Vandals missed 12 free throws (18 of 30) and turned the ball over 16 times.

Idaho shot 26 of 54 (.481) from the floor and 8 of 18 (.444) from 3-point range.
