Area residents earn Eagle Scout awards

Anthony Goodwin, a member of Troop 400, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest in the Boy Scouts.

For his project, he collected and delivered more than 1,000 pounds of food and personal items to members of the Armed Forces serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. With the donations he collected to fulfill specific requests of troops, he was able to create and mail more than 75 customized care packages, containing books, playing cards, hygienic products and nonperishable food.

Goodwin is the son of Kyle and Mary Ann Goodwin of Veradale, and is a senior at Gonzaga Prep.

Matthew Gardner, a member of Boy Scout Troop 130, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest awarded in the Boy Scouts.

For his project, Gardner volunteered with the Spokane Humane Society to put a safe and sanitary floor in the 40-by-60-foot barn. The project required organizing volunteers, cleaning out the barn, removing the pens, excavating and grading the floor and spreading and compacting 30 tons of crushed gravel. His project took more than 410 hours of labor.

Gardner graduated from North Central High School in 2011, and is the son of Daryl Gardner and Janice Gardner, both of Spokane.

Michael Choma, a member of Boy Scout Troop 117, has attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank given in the Boy Scouts.

For his project, Choma refurbished and built locator signs for the campus at Assumption Parish School.

Choma is a junior at Shadle Park High School, and is the son of Bill and Roberta Choma, of Spokane.

Keign Vedvick has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest awarded in the Boy Scouts. Vedvick is a member of Troop 333.

For his project, Vedvick volunteered his time at SpokAnimal CARE and helped construct shelter’s new dog park. His efforts earned him the Outstanding Youth in the Community Volunteer Award.

Vedvick is a freshman at Lewis and Clark High School and the son of Lars and Kari Vedvick, of Spokane.

• Five local residents recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Air Force Airman Benjamin Carson is the son of Geary Carson of Spokane. He graduated in 2010 from Mead High School.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Joanna Porter is a 2010 graduate of Rogers High School and the daughter of Kelly Porter of Spokane Valley.

Air Force Airman Cody Dahm earned distinction as an honor graduate. He graduated in 2010 from Liberty High School in Spangle and is the son of Cathy Dahm of Spokane.

Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Jennifer Wolcott is the daughter of Cheryl Tyre of Spokane and graduated from Ferris High School in 2002.

Air Force Airman Preston Deschane is the son of Michael and Monique Deschane of Otis Orchards and a 2011 graduate of East Valley High School.

• The following local residents graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Army National Guard Pvt. Ryan Villalobos is a 1996 graduate of Shadle Park High School.

Army National Guard Pvt. Randall Bercot is the son of Robert Bercot of Spokane and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 2011.

Army Pvt. Corbin Dial is a 2008 graduate of East Valley High School and the son of Kerry Dial of Spokane Valley.

• Army National Guard Pvt. Stephen Davis graduated from the basic field artillery cannon crewmember advanced individual training course at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

He is the son of Sam and Michelle Davis of Spokane and a 2011 graduate of Shadle Park High School.

• Army Pvt. Mathew McLean graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

He graduated in 2009 from North Central High School and is the son of Mathew McLean of Clayton, Wash., and Senay Burton of Serpintine Road, Wood River, Ore.

• Army Pvt. Nevan Flewelling graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

He graduated from Mount Spokane High School in 2011 and is the son of Doug Flewelling of Colbert.

• Army Pvt. Christian Mashtare graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo.

He is the son of Richard Mashtare of Spokane Valley and Jessica Lawrence of Spokane. Mashtare graduated in 2010 from Rogers High School.

Jasper Danielson, a student at St. George’s School, was selected as a 2011 Research Science Institute Scholar to attend the science, technology, engineering and math summer program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, during this past summer.

Danielson was among 47 U.S. scholars who participated in the six week college-level research program with leading scientists and researchers in the Boston area. Students had the opportunity to experience and participate in original research in university laboratories, hospitals and corporate research facilities.
