In brief: Teen, 12-year-old die in crash with truck

Two young girls were killed and another injured after crashing into a logging truck Friday morning on Highway 95 near De Smet, Idaho.

Driver Alexandria M. Baysinger, 17, and passenger Amber J. Baysinger, 12, were both killed in the 7:30 a.m. crash, according to an Idaho State Police news release.

Alexandria Baysinger was northbound on U.S. Highway 95 in a Nissan coupe when the car crossed the centerline and crashed head-on into the logging truck. The truck driver, Jack A. Hester, 34, of Sagle, was uninjured, the news release said.

Alexandria Baysinger was pronounced dead at the scene. Amber Baysinger was later pronounced dead at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow. Another passenger, a 14-year-old girl, was taken to Gritman Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

All the girls are of Carlin, Nev.

All involved were wearing seat belts, the news release said. The road was blocked for about seven hours.

Two arrested in burglary sting

Two burglars’ alleged plan to return for a stash of stolen goods backfired Friday when they walked into a surveillance trap set by Spokane police, officers say.

Starla R. Dillard, 26, and Michael W. Withey, 31, were arrested on residential burglary charges after Withey dropped Dillard off in the 2600 block of West Rockwell Avenue and she went to a home that had been burglarized twice this week.

Officer Bill Hager and members of the Patrol Anti-Crime Team were watching the home hoping the burglars would return for more stolen goods.

Dillard matched witness descriptions and was arrested after exiting the home.Withey was arrested after police pulled him over. Police seized his Subaru pending a search warrant and recovered stolen property. The investigation is ongoing.

Use of stolen card leads to theft suspect

A man believed to be responsible for gas thefts in the West Plains area was identified this week after he tried to return merchandise that had been purchased with a stolen credit card.

Gary Dale Hutt, 38, was arrested Tuesday after he went to the General Store on 2424 N. Division St. to return some of the $500 worth of items he’d purchased Monday with the stolen card, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

Property crimes detectives searched Hutt’s home in the 5100 block of West Sunset Boulevard after his arrest and found a stolen laptop and gun safes, as well as items purchased at the General Store with the stolen card, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives noticed a van circling the area while they were searching Hutt’s home, and its plates indicated it had been stolen. The driver, Hutt’s live-in girlfriend, Courtny R. Jacobsen, 34, was arrested for driving while suspended.

Detectives found a large gas tank in the van and are continuing their investigation into the fuel thefts on the West Plains.
