Two men die in pickup truck rollover near Cheney

Two men were killed this morning in the crash of a speeding pickup truck west of Cheney. The 28-year-old driver, a Cheney resident, and 30-year-old passenger, from Spokane, were found dead, still in their seatbelts, inside the 2004 Ford F-150 about 6:30 a.m. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office withheld their names. The truck was traveling an estimated 90 mph – twice the speed limit – on Salnave Road, just east of Granite Lake Road, about 2½ miles west of Cheney, the sheriff’s office said. The pickup left a straight section of road, rolled at least four times and came to rest about 344 feet out in a wheat field, according to investigators. A person driving to work discovered the crash, and Spokane County Fire District 3 firefighters arrived within 10 minutes and reported both men were dead. A Spokane sheriff’s chaplain was attempting to contact family members today. The names of the deceased likely will be released after autopsies are done next week, the sheriff’s office said. The investigation continues. It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident. Traffic investigators will wait about a month to receive toxicology results from the state toxicology laboratory in Seattle.
