Rogers wins own M2 Mallet event
Led by weight-class champions Dwayne Robinson and Anthony Rider, the Rogers wrestling team took first place at the Rogers M2 Mallet Tournament on Tuesday at Rogers High School.
The win was the first in 10 years for the Pirates at their annual tournament, according to Martin Mitchell, who is in his second year as head coach at Rogers.
The tournament featured varsity and junior varsity teams and teams with a combination of both. University’s junior varsity was second, followed by Mead JV, Mt. Spokane and West Valley.
Robinson pinned West Valley’s Kyle White in 3 minutes, 48 seconds to take the title at 220 pounds. The championship match of the 285-pound weight class was a battle between teammates. The Pirates’ Rider edged Ken Keller 4-2.
The match of the night was the showdown between Chewelah’s Dalton Mudgett and Rogers’ Michael Sundheim at 145 pounds. Mudgett won 12-8 in a match that featured several takedowns and reversals from both wrestlers.
Mudgett was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler. He won three of his four matches by way of pin.
In the 160-pound finale, Anthony Fleck of Mt. Spokane edged Shadle Park’s Kelly Sandall 1-0 in the closest championship match of the tournament.
