Angry man beaned by Spokane police

A domestic violence suspect was stopped by Spokane police Thursday night after one officer fired a shotgun loaded with bags of beans. Police were called about 6 p.m. to apartments in the 2300 block of East Euclid Avenue and found a man holding two large kitchen knives in his hands and trying to break into one of the apartments. A fight had started earlier involving the man’s wife. He was identified as Scott E. Leiper, 53. Police said Leiper was attempting to kick in the door of an apartment occupied by his wife. He refused repeated commands by officers to drop the knives. An officer fired a round of bean bags from a shotgun. At the same time, a woman ran toward Leiper. Officers then rushed Leiper to protect the woman. Leiper then dropped the knives, police said. Leiper was booked for domestic violence assault. The woman who rushed Leiper was also arrested for obstructing police. She was identiifed as Amanda F. Dougherty, 44.
