Gonzaga women open WCC play with victory

Redshirt sophomore Haiden Palmer scored 13 of her 20 points in the first half, and senior Kayla Standish had 16 of her 20 in the second half Thursday as Gonzaga opened West Coast Conference women’s basketball play with an 80-65 win at Portland.

The Bulldogs won their sixth consecutive game to improve to 11-2.

Junior Taelor Karr hit a pair of 3-pointers to spark a 12-5 run that gave the Bulldogs a 34-24 lead late in the first half. Karr finished the half 4 for 4 from the field, including three 3-pointers.

GU took a 40-29 lead into halftime after Palmer’s last-second jumper.

The Bulldogs used a 14-5 run to take an 18-point lead with 14:35 left.

Gonzaga shot 29 of 56 from the floor, including 6 of 13 from long range, and 16 of 18 from the free-throw line, led by Standish’s 6-for-6 night. Stanish and Palmer were a combined 15 for 27 from the field.

ReZina TecleMariam led the Pilots (7-8) with 21 points, hitting 5 of 9 3-pointers. Natalie Day added 17 points and eight rebounds.

Washington State 75, Oregon 47: Jazmine Perkins had 15 points and 12 rebounds and the visiting Cougars (7-6) had four players in double figures to win a Pacific-12 Conference opener over the Ducks (8-5) at Eugene, Ore.

WSU notched its biggest margin of victory in a conference game since a 102-69 win over the Ducks on Jan. 20, 1991.

The Cougars hit a season-high 10 3-pointers, including Rosetta Adzasu’s 3-for-3 effort. Adzasu scored a season-best 15 points, while teammates Sage Romberg and Carly Noyes had 10 apiece.

The Cougars put together an 11-0 run to lead 16-4 after less than 5 minutes.

Eastern Washington 79, Montana State 73: The Eagles (7-7) set three records for steals while opening Big Sky Conference play with a win over the Bobcats (8-5, 0-1).

Chene Cooper had seven steals, tying the school’s single-game record, to become the Eagles’ career leader with 218 steals. Lisa Comstock Schultz (1982-85) held the previous record of 212.

EWU also broke the 32-year-old school record with 22 steals for a game.

Eastern’s Brianne Ryan scored 31 points, hitting 12 of 23 field goals including five 3-pointers.

Cooper also had 11 assists and combined with Carrie Ojeda for 33 points and 12 rebounds.

Oregon State 60, Washington 55: Ali Gibson and Sage Indendi combined for 27 points to carry the host Beavers (10-2) past the Huskies in a Pac-12 opener at Corvallis, Ore.

Regina Rogers and Mackenzie Argens combined for 33 points and 25 rebounds for UW (8-3).

Idaho 53, North Dakota 50: Senior Ganeaya Rogers scored 15 points and Stacey Barr hit 4 of 8 3-pointers as the Vandals (5-8) defeated the Fighting Sioux (6-7) at the Lady Griz Holiday Classic in Missoula to avenge a 30-point loss from mid-November.

Idaho led by as many as 20 points despite foul trouble for season leading scorer Alyssa Charlston, who picked up two fouls in the first 89 seconds.

The Fighting Sioux used a 13-0 second-half run to rally, but Charlston hit two free throws with 44 seconds left and Keri Arendse hit 1 of 2 free throws for the final margin.

CC Spokane 60: CCS alumni 52: Amanda Buttrey hit 5 of 8 3-pointers on the way to 19 points as the Sasquatch (5-7) defeated former Sasquatch at Spokane Falls CC.

Megan Tullis had a game-high 12 rebounds for the Sasquatch, who shot 5 of 34 from the floor in the second half. Katie Rodgers led the alumni with 13 points and nine rebounds.

North Idaho 73, Yakima Valley 53: Korina Baker and Julia Salmio scored 12 points apiece and Hannah Love had 10 rebounds as the Cardinals (9-2) defeated the Yaks (9-3) in a semifinal of the Lower Columbia Holiday Classic at Longview, Wash.

NIC will play for the championship at 3 p.m. today against either Big Bend or Whatcom.
