Lesnar retires after loss to Overeem

Mixed martial arts: Brock Lesnar retired from mixed martial arts after Alistair Overeem stopped him with one vicious kick to the body in the first round of their heavyweight bout at UFC 141 in Las Vegas on Friday night.

Lesnar is the UFC’s biggest pay-per-view star and the former heavyweight champion, but his return from a 14-month injury absence ended with Lesnar staggering and crumpling against the cage. He couldn’t recover from a kick from Overeem (36-11), the 6-foot-5 Dutch kickboxing star making his UFC debut.

Lesnar (5-3) is a former NCAA champion wrestler and pro wrestling star who rose swiftly to the top of MMA. But he has fought just three times in the past 2 ½ years while dealing with bouts of diverticulitis, a lower-intestinal ailment that nearly killed him.

Late boost from Wade sparks Heat

NBA: Dwyane Wade hit a jumper from the wing, then scored on an inbounds pass from LeBron James with 4.6 seconds to play to lift the undefeated Miami Heat to a 103-101 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves at Minneapolis.

Playing on a sore foot, Wade finished with 19 points, while James had 34 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds on his 27th birthday.

Alfredsson’s 400th goal a game-winner

NHL: Daniel Alfredsson scored his 400th career goal at 3:31 of overtime to give the Ottawa Senators a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames at Ottawa.

Czechs dump USA with big third period

Junior hockey: Petr Holik scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period and Petr Mrazek made 52 saves to lead the Czech Republic to a 5-2 win over the United States at the world junior hockey championship in Edmonton, Alberta.

Dominik Uher of the Spokane Chiefs had one assist for the Czech Republic.

Buckner joins Boise Hawks staff

Baseball: The Chicago Cubs have hired former star Bill Buckner as hitting coach for the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League.

Buckner, a longtime major leaguer, was a career .289 hitter over 22 seasons. In the minors, he played for the Spokane Indians in 1969 and 1970, batting .335 in 111 games for the 1970 PCL champions.

• Two-time All-Star Mora retires: Two-time All-Star Melvin Mora is retiring from baseball, five weeks shy of his 40th birthday. Mora, who began last year with the Arizona Diamondbacks, was released on July 1.

Djokovic downs Federer in Abu Dhabi

Tennis: Top-ranked Novak Djokovic swept aside Roger Federer 6-2, 6-1 Friday and will play David Ferrer in the final of the World Tennis Championship exhibition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The fifth-ranked Ferrer defeated second-ranked Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-2 in the other semifinal. Nadal was nursing a sore shoulder and never seriously challenged his fellow Spaniard.
