Agreed The Buffalo Sabres say owner Tom Golisano has agreed to sell the National Hockey League franchise and its related companies to Pennsylvania businessman Terry Pegula. The team says the agreement was completed and is subject to NHL approval.

Announced Five-time Olympic gold medalist Ian Thorpe is coming out of retirement, hoping to make Australia’s team for next year’s London Games. Thorpe, 28, retired in November 2006 after setting 13 world records, winning 11 world championship golds and two Olympic golds.

Accused Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen was accused of assaulting a police officer and faced an NFL investigation after he was arrested during a traffic stop in South Los Angeles. Los Angeles police said officers used a stun gun to subdue the 6-foot-3, 275-pound Griffen during a struggle after he tried to flee.

Revealed Top-ranked Rafael Nadal will need 10 days to recover from a leg muscle injury sustained during his quarterfinal loss at the Australian Open. A scan revealed Nadal tore a muscle in his right leg during last week’s straight-sets defeat to David Ferrer.

Hired Former World Series star Willie Mays-Aikens was hired as a minor league coach by the Kansas City Royals. The 56-year-old Aikens hit four home runs for the Royals in their 1980 Series loss to Philadelphia. He later served almost 14 years on gun, bribery and cocaine charges.

Denied Baltimore Orioles reliever Alfredo Simon was denied bail and will remain in jail on an involuntary manslaugh- ter charge in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The 29-year-old pitcher is expected to stay in jail while officials investigate a fatal shoot- ing on New Year’s Eve. Simon’s lawyer has said he was firing celebratory shots in the air.

Died Former weight- lifting world champion Gyozo Veres of Hungary died Tuesday at Mel- bourne, Australia. He was 74. The cause of death was not disclosed. Veres was the middleweight world champion in 1962 and 1963.
