Bassoonist, ballet at Bing with Allegro

Allegro Baroque and Beyond returns to the Bing Crosby Theater stage Friday with a program of music and dance titled “Night at the Opera.”

Jesse Read, a bassoonist from Vancouver, B.C., will be featured in works from his CD by that name as well as operatic pieces by Gioachino Rossini.

Read, a professor at the University of British Columbia, has served as principal bassoonist of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and soloed throughout the world.

Dancers from Theatre Ballet of Spokane will perform the ballet from Rossini’s “Armida,” in new choreography by artistic director Dodie Askegard. Allegro’s David Dutton will join in on oboe in arias and ballet music from “Armida.”

Newly discovered four-hand piano arrangements of the overtures from Rossini’s “Barber of Seville” and “Italians in Algiers” will be performed on a restored 1845 Collard & Collard grand piano by David Rostkoski, artist teacher emeritus at Eastern Washington University, and Allegro’s Yi-chun Chen.

Read also will perform the “Coffee Tango” by Norwegian composer Robert Rønnes.

Whitworth University professor Leonard Oakland will give a pre-concert talk, “Rossini, His Life and Times,” at 7:15 p.m.
