Spokane Valley churches get into Super Bowl spirit

Nina Culver, Ninac@Spokesman.Com

Every year some Valley churches spend the day of the year’s biggest football game focused instead on helping low-income people in the community.

The annual Souper Bowl of Caring event is observed nationwide. Churches collect money and food items to be donated to local food banks. Each church then reports their totals. In the last 20 years more than $71 million has been donated.

• The Sunday school children at Zion Lutheran Church, 8304 E. Buckeye Ave., will be taking up the collection after the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services Sunday. Their goal is to collect 200 food items and $100 to donate to the food bank run by St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Hillyard.

• Peace Lutheran Church, 4214 N. Harvard Road, will accept donations after the 9:30 a.m. worship service. Proceeds will be given to the Spokane Valley Partners Food Bank.

• A soup pot will be out for donations after the 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday at Opportunity Christian Church, 708 N. Pines Road.

A lot of benefits

The Knights of Columbus at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church will host a breakfast Sunday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to benefit Valley Meals on Wheels. The menu will feature pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage and beverages. The meal is by donation.

St. Joseph’s will also host a benefit concert Friday at 7 p.m. for the Spokane Valley Partners Food Bank. Local professional and amateur musicians will perform show tunes. A dessert reception will follow. Admission is $10 per person, $5 for students or $30 for a family of four or more.

The church is at 4521 N. ArdenRoad in Otis Orchards. Call (509) 926-7133 for more information.

Ready for some football?

Anyone interested in watching the Super Bowl on Sunday is invited to Genesis Church, 14415 E. Sprague Ave., for the big game. Snacks will be served and child care will be available. Kickoff is 3:15 p.m.

Valentine party

The Veradale United Church of Christ, 611 N. Progress Road, is planning ahead and hosting a potluck lunch and Valentine-making party Sunday after the 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday. The craft supplies will be provided by the church. Those attending are asked to bring a dish to share.
