Area roundup: Eastern’s Chaney sets shot put mark

Eastern Washington senior Erica Chaney broke the school record in the shot put with an event-winning throw of 51 feet, 7 inches to lead the Eagles at the Bronco Open indoor track and field event Saturday in Nampa, Idaho.

She broke the record of 50-11 set 20 years ago set by Nancy Kuiper.

Along with Chaney, six other EWU track and field athletes met the standards to advance to the Big Sky championships Feb. 25-26 in Pocatello, Idaho.

Robini Taylor cleared 11-11 3/4 in the women’s pole vault, placing her fourth on EWU’s all-time list. She was fifth in the competition.

Leading the EWU men was Zach Nielson, who took third in the weight throw with a distance of 57 feet, 4¼ inches.

Swimming

Whitworth’s men’s and women’s swimming teams completed undefeated Northwest Conference dual meet seasons with vicories over Whitman in Walla Walla.

The Pirates’ men defeated Whitman 171-91 and have won 78 straight conference dual meets.

The Whitworth women won 170-91 and have won 35 dual meets in a row.
