Let’s start with a contest.

What would George Washington have said if he had seen the state named after him?

You can approach this from the perspective of him having been able to see the state during his lifetime, at the time of statehood or even in the present day.

The reader submitting the best answer will win two tickets to the final GU men’s basketball home game of the season. That’s Feb. 28, against Cal State Bakersfield.

The other day at a Spokane grade school:

Teacher: “What are the important parts of a complete sentence?”

Student: “A verb and a nun.”

I resemble that remark: April Hume signed up her young daughters for the Marmot March, a kids run at Riverfront Park held on the Saturday before Bloomsday. “My husband picked up the registration envelope to take it to the mailbox and asked if I was sure the marmot run was a real thing or just something The Slice made up.”

Her five cents’ worth: In December, Darleen Beedy’s family brought home Ziva, a cairn terrier puppy. About two weeks later, the small dog pooped out a nickel. “Not sure where it came from or how long she’d been carrying it around,” said Beedy.

At last report, the mystery nickel was soaking in a small jar of alcohol and Ziva had yet to remit any additional payments.

How to feel old: Just consider that “I Ran (So Far Away),” that once inescapable song by A Flock of Seagulls, will be 30 years old next year.

Today’s Slice question: Long ago, I went to the Playfair race track with a group of work friends. One woman in our number brought along a man she had been dating for quite some time. I had not met him before.

The next day, I made a point of telling the woman in question that her boyfriend seemed like a good guy. At which point she informed me that they had broken up the night before, after the horse races.
