In brief: Rondo leads Celtics’ charge over Magic

NBA: Rajon Rondo scored 11 of his 26 points in the third quarter when the Boston Celtics capitalized on Orlando’s cold shooting to take charge and go on to a 91-80 win over the Magic on Sunday in Boston.

The Celtics led 46-43 at halftime and stretched that to 70-55 with 3:36 left in the third quarter. At that point, Boston had made 9 of their 10 shots in the period while the Orlando had hit just 4 of 18.

The Magic scored the last six points of the third quarter, cutting the lead to 70-61, but the Celtics came right back with a 7-2 run to go ahead 77-63. They led by at least eight the rest of the way.

• Boston guard Marquis Daniels bruised his spinal cord in a collision and is expected to be sidelined at least a month.

“He’s full function now. He’s fine,” said Danny Ainge, Boston’s president of basketball operations. “We’re going to keep him (in the hospital) overnight just to go through some tests, but he’s fine.”

Asked how long Daniels would be out, Ainge said: “A month, two months. It’ll be a month, anyway.”

• Heat ease past Clippers despite James’ low: Dwyane Wade had 28 points, eight rebounds and eight assists and Miami stretched its winning streak to six games with a 97-79 win over the visiting Los Angeles Clippers.

Chris Bosh scored 16, Eddie House added 15 and LeBron James had a season-low 12 points for Miami.

Blake Griffin had his 42nd double-double for the season, finishing with 21 points and 16 rebounds.

Lecavalier leads Lightning to OT win

NHL: Vincent Lecavalier had a power-play goal at 4:53 in overtime, Steven Stamkos scored his NHL-leading 40th goal and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 in Tampa, Fla.

St. Louis defenseman Eric Brewer was called for a holding penalty 3:40 into the extra session, and Lecavalier converted a rebound backhander for his ninth goal of the season, giving Tampa Bay the victory.

• Capitals end Penguins’ win streak at five: Brooks Laich scored and Marcus Johansson grabbed goals as the Capitals stayed beat the star-starved Pittsburgh Penguins 3-0 in Washington.

The Capitals snapped the five-game winning streak of their dreaded rival Penguins, who are dealing with a likely season-ending knee injury to Evgeni Malkin and are awaiting Sidney Crosby’s return from a concussion.

Unbeaten Buckeyes top Golden Gophers

Men’s basketball: David Lighty scored 19 points and Jared Sullinger had 18 points and 13 rebounds to help top-ranked Ohio State (24-0, 11-0 Big Ten) remain unbeaten with an 82-69 victory over No. 18 Minnesota (16-7, 5-6) in Minneapolis.

Every starter for the Buckeyes scored 10 or more points as they stretched the second-longest winning streak in school history.

Blake Hoffarber led Minnesota with 16 points.

Bears rout Cowgirls for school’s best start

Women’s basketball: Brittney Griner scored 19 points, Destiny Williams added 17 and top-ranked Baylor (21-1, 8-0 Big 12) beat Oklahoma State 84-57 in Stillwater, Okla., to achieve the best start to a season in school history.

Baylor built a 20-point lead by halftime and then put away its 18th straight win with a 12-0 run early in the second half.

Vicky McIntyre scored 12 points to lead Oklahoma State (13-8, 1-7).

• Morris leads UCLA over USC: Darxia Morris scored a career-high 24 points, Jasmine Dixon added 23 and No. 10 UCLA (19-2, 9-1 Pac-10) pulled away in the closing minutes to beat Southern California (13-8, 5-5) 74-67 in Los Angeles, giving the Bruins a fourth consecutive victory over their crosstown rivals.

Clijsters, Belgium beat U.S. in Fed Cup

Tennis: Australian Open winner Kim Clijsters came from behind to beat Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-7 (10), 6-2, 6-1 and lead Belgium to a 4-1 win over the United States and a place in the semifinals of the Fed Cup World Group in Antwerp, Belgium.

After Clijsters gave Belgium an insurmountable advantage, Yanina Wickmayer defeated Melanie Oudin 6-2, 6-0 for a 4-0 lead. The U.S. team secured its only point when Liezel Huber and Vania King beat Kirsten Flipkens and An-Sophie Mestach 6-3, 7-5 in doubles.

• Robredo finds win over Giraldo: Tommy Robredo beat Santiago Giraldo 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5) to win the Movistar Open clay-court tournament in Santiago, Chile.

The sixth-seeded Robredo won his 10th ATP title after failing to reach a final last year.

• Dodig beats Berrer: Unseeded Ivan Dodig of Croatia won his first ATP Tour title in Zagreb, Croatia, beating Michael Berrer of Germany 6-3, 6-4 before home fans at the Zagreb Indoors.

• Anderson wins SA Open: Home favorite Kevin Anderson won the SA Tennis Open by beating Somdev Devvarman of India 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in Johannesburg.

Wilson atop board at delayed Phoenix Open

Golf: Mark Wilson had a two-stroke lead in the Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Ariz., when play was suspended because of darkness.

Wilson was 18 under. Thomas Gainey was tied for second with Vijay Singh and Jason Dufner. Singh shot a 66, while Dufner had four holes left.

The start Sunday was delayed a half-hour because of frost. About nine hours of playing time has been lost to frost and frozen turf, forcing the finish today.

Austrian takes giant slalom at World Cup

Skiing: Philipp Schoerghofer captured his first career victory by winning the World Cup giant slalom in Hinterstoder, Austria, the final men’s race before the world championships.

Schoerghofer finished in an aggregate time of 2 minutes, 46.44 seconds.

• German Rebensburg wins women’s GS: Olympic champion Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany won a women’s World Cup giant slalom race Sunday, and World Cup leader Maria Riesch extended her lead over defending champion Lindsey Vonn to 156 points.

Rebensburg clocked a combined time of 1 minute, 36.96 seconds on the Arberg course.

Miscellany: Surgeons operating on Formula One driver Robert Kubica have turned their focus to his severely damaged right hand, which was among the serious injuries he suffered when his rally car hit a wall at “high speed” Sunday in Genoa, Italy.

The 26-year-old Kubica “suffered a high-speed accident this morning (Sunday) while competing in the Ronde di Andora Rally,” the Pole’s Lotus Renault team said in a statement. He was “diagnosed with multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand. He is currently undergoing surgery at the Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure.”

• U.S. heptathlete improves record: Ashton Eaton of the United States has improved his own world record for the men’s indoor heptathlon.

The 23-year-old Oregon native scored 6,568 points at the International Indoor Combined Events meeting in Tallinn, Estonia. It was 69 points higher than the mark he set at the NCAA Indoor championships in March when he broke Dan O’Brien’s 17-year-old record.
