Cheney, Pullman girls advance in 2A District 7 openers

Fifth-seeded Cheney pulled the surprise in the first round of the 2A District 7 girls tournament on Monday night and joined No. 3 seed Pullman in advancing to the second round on Wednesday night.

Cheney 51, East Valley 46: The Blackhawks (11-9) made five free throws down the stretch to break from a 46-46 tie and oust the No. 4 seeded host Knights (11-10). Mikayla Vergo led Cheney with 14 points, making 4 of 4 3-pointers to lead the Blackhawks’ 7-for-10 performance beyond the arc. Brooklyn Bellomy led EV, which shot just 26 percent from the field, with 11 points.

Cheney plays at No. 1 seed Clarkston (15-5) on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Pullman 64, Deer Park 36: Shelby Cheslek had 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals as the Greyhounds (11-9) eliminated the visiting sixth-seeded Stags (6-16). Tessa Heins scored 14 to lead Deer Park.

Pullman is at No. 2 seed West Valley (16-4) Wednesday at 6.

Idaho 3A District 1

Kellogg 49, St. Maries 48: Brittany Reed hit from just inside the 3-point line with one second to play to cap Kellogg’s comeback and send the fifth-seeded Wildcats (8-11) past the host No. 4 Lumberjacks (6-14) in the loser-out game. Reed and Marah Ashcraft led Kellogg with 12 points each. Kendra Buell led St. Maries with 18 points.

Kellogg plays top-seeded Timberlake (16-4) in the start of double-elimination play Wednesday at Lakeland at 6 p.m.

Nonleague

North Idaho Christian 28, Kootenai 20: Kana Shanley’s eight points led North Idaho. Ellison Schultz had 11 rebounds and four points off the bench for the host Warriors (1-15).

Boys

Northeast A District

Chewelah 50, Riverside 39: Balanced scoring was the key for the sixth-seeded Cougars (6-15), who went on the road and eliminated the No. 3 Rams. Andrew Pugh, scoring 10 in the second half when Chewelah broke from a 20-20 halftime tie, Derek Smith and Nate Biancardi scored 12 each for the Cougars. Jordan Woods, whose 3 pointer was Riverside’s only scoring in the third quarter, led the Rams with 11.

Chewelah plays No. 2 Colville (11-9) at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the start of double-elimination play at Mead.

Northeast 1B District

Odessa-Harrington 69, Curlew 49: The Titans (7-14) broke on top early and maintained a comfortable lead most of the rest of the way in eliminating the visiting Cougars (7-12) in the play-in game. Justin Hunt had 21 points and Nick Sperline 19 to lead the Titans. Chris Browning had 16 points to lead three double-figure scorers for Curlew.

O-H is at Panorama No. 1 Wellpinit (18-4) at 6 Wednesday to start double-elimination play.
