Deer Park man, 85, assaulted, robbed in home

An elderly man was robbed in his Deer Park home Monday by a man who knocked on his door seeking money for gas, officials said today. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is looking for tips on the identity of the robber, who is described as a white man about 20 years old, 5-foot-6 to 6 feet tall and clean shaven. The robbery was reported Tuesday afternoon after the victim’s daughter learned of the attack, which occurred about 5 p.m. Monday at the man’s home in the 3800 block of North Sherman Road, the Sheriff’s Office said. The 85-year-old victim said a young man knocked on his door and said he was out of gas and needed money. Intending to give him $20, the victim went upstairs to retrieve his wallet and was headbutted when he returned to the front door. The young man stole the wallet and left in a car driven by another man. The victim said the car was “an old beater, possibly a sedan” and could not describe the driver. “The blow knocked the victim backwards and left him with a lump and mark on his forehead,” according to a news release by Sgt. Dave Reagan. “He does not have a right hand below the wrist and was unable to hang onto the wallet.” The wallet contained the man’s driver’s license, Social Security and medical cards and less than $100. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Crime Check at (509) 456-2233.
