Seattle University cruises past EWU in women’s basketball

Salena Dickerson and Elle Kerfoot each tallied 17 points and Tatiana Heck chipped in 16 points as the Seattle Redhawks (7-17) knocked off the Eastern Washington Eagles 74-53 in nonconference women’s basketball action Tuesday in Seattle.

Kayla Evans hit five 3-pointers to lead the Eagles (8-14) with 15 points, breaking the school record for career 3-pointers. Evans, who has 197, broke the previous record of 195 set by Stephanie Ulmer.

Seattle, which also received nine rebounds from Dickerson, hit 54.2 percent of its shots in the second half to hold off any run by the Eagles, who shot just 25 percent in the first half.

The 17 first-half points by EWU put the Eagles in a 15-point hole at halftime. Brianne Ryan added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles.

Women’s golf

Idaho’s Kayla Mortellaro scored a 3-over-par 75 in the third round at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, finishing in a tie for second place.

Mortellaro scored a three-round total of 2-under 214 at the par-72, 6,321-yard Vistoso Golf Course. Her score led the Vandals to a 12th-place finish, off the pace of champion Arizona (875).

The Wildcats’ Isabelle Boineau won medalist honors with a 4-under 212.

Gonzaga finished in 10th place, led by Victoria Fallgren’s 231.

Swimming

Whitworth’s Aaron Vaccaro won the Northwest Conference men’s swimming athlete of the week and Whitworth’s Melissa Barringer was the women’s swimmer of the week.

Hockey

Ryan Baines started a run of three goals for Beaver Valley to erase a two-goal deficit and the Nighthawks (31-13-1-3) went on to beat the Spokane Braves (21-26-1-2) 5-2 in KIJHL action in Fruitvale, B.C.
