Area roundup: NIC loses twice in SWAC opener

Savanah Webster combined to go 3 for 5 at the plate with two RBIs and a triple over two games to lead Salt Lake CC (10-4, 2-0) to a 5-4, 6-1 softball sweep over North Idaho (5-6, 0-2) in their Scenic West Athletic Conference opener Wednesday in St. George, Utah.

The Bruins scored the winning run with one out in the seventh inning to win 5-4, despite a three-run home run from NIC’s Shelby Gonzales in the top of the sixth inning.

SLCC scored three in the first inning and three in the third in the second game to put the Cardinals away.

Track and field

Eastern Washington’s Erica Chaney was named Big Sky field athlete of the week after breaking the school record in the shot put with a meet-winning mark of 51 feet, 7¾ inches.
