Salt Lake sweeps North Idaho in SWAC softball

Ariel Zimmerman pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the opener and struck out 22 on the day at Salt Lake CC (11-3, 4-0) swept North Idaho 5-0, 7-6 in Scenic West Athletic Conference softball Thursday at St. George, Utah.

Zimmerman (6-2) struck out seven while pitching the final four innings of the second game, which the Bruins won on Kylee Brinkerhoff’s RBI single in the 10th.

NIC’s Kristina DeAnda finished the day 4 for 9 with three runs.

SLCC has won 10 consecutive games while the Cardinals (5-8, 0-4) have dropped six straight.

Baseball

West Coast Conference coaches selected Gonzaga for sixth place in their preseason poll.

The Bulldogs, who placed junior left-hander Ryan Carpenter on the preseason All-WCC team, received 20 votes in the poll.

San Diego is favored to win the conference. The Toreros received seven first-place votes and 49 points.
