Shadle Park girls secure top seed in District 8 3A tourney with win over Ferris

The Shadle Park girls basketball team took care of business Thursday.

That means the Highlanders (14-6 overall, 13-5 league), who secured the District 8 3A tournament top seed, will entertain second-seeded North Central when the tourney begins at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Shadle used a big second quarter to take control, stopping the visiting Ferris Saxons 56-44 as Greater Spokane League girls basketball concluded.

Chelsea Chandler led Shadle with 16 points and Kendra Knutsen added 10 to go with seven assists.

Katara Belton-Sharp led Ferris (6-13, 5-13) with 15 points. Ferris goes to Central Valley at 5:30 p.m. Monday in a District 8 4A loser-out opener. The winner advances to take on top-seeded Gonzaga Prep on Tuesday.

North Central 61, Central Valley 58: Riley Holsinger scored 26 points and Hailey Markham-Patti added 13 as the visiting Indians (13-7, 12-6) outlasted the Bears (10-10, 9-9) for their first season sweep of Central Valley.

Prior to this season, CV owned a 66-1 series record against NC with the Indians’ lone win coming in 1987.

Brooke Gallaway paced CV with 17 points. Sydney Emory added 11 points and Mariah Cunningham 10 for the Bears.

Mead 54, Mt. Spokane 32: The Panthers (13-7, 11-7) avoided the loser-out district opener, securing the third seed over the visiting Wildcats (7-13, 5-13).

Jade Redmon led Mead with 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots.

Mt. Spokane opens district at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at U-Hi in a loser-out game. Mead goes to No. 2 Lewis and Clark on Tuesday, also at 5:30.

Gonzaga Prep 52, University 48: The Bullpups (17-3, 16-2) outscored the visiting Titans (7-13, 6-12) 31-20 in the pivotal second and third quarters.

Tia Presley led G-Prep with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Lindsay Stockton had 11 points and six assists. Kayleigh Valley led U-Hi with 14 points.

G-Prep opens district Tuesday, awaiting the winner of Monday’s Ferris-CV game.

Lewis and Clark at Rogers: No report was received.

LC enters the District 8 4A as the second seed and will play host to third-seeded Mead on Tuesday.
