Ducks fly past Trojans

Malcolm Armstead had 14 points and five assists as the Oregon Ducks beat the Southern California Trojans 61-51 in Pacific-10 Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday night in Los Angeles.

Armstead scored nine of his points in the final 7 minutes, including two free throws with 20 seconds left, to help keep the Ducks safely ahead and post their fourth straight victory over the Trojans.

E.J. Singler had 11 points for the Ducks, who led by as many as 15 points in the second half.

Despite being double- and triple-teamed, Nikola Vucevic had 22 points and 15 rebounds for Southern California. He was the only player in double digits for the Trojans.

Oregon made 42.9 percent of its 3-pointers and shot 41.8 percent from the field.

Trailing 55-40, USC went on a 9-2 run capped by Maurice Jones’ 3-pointer with 2:55 remaining.

USC scored the game’s first basket, but Oregon took command the rest of the way.

UCLA 69, Oregon State 61: Malcolm Lee scored 19 points before fouling out and UCLA defeated Oregon State in Los Angeles, extending the Bruins’ winning streak against the Beavers to 13 games.

Joshua Smith added 15 points for UCLA, which won its fifth straight game and ninth in the past 10 contests.

Of course, it helped that the Bruins were playing the Beavers, who haven’t beaten them since the 2005 Pac-10 tournament, making UCLA’s domination the longest active streak by one Pac-10 team against another.

Oregon State was led by Jared Cunningham with 14 points, while Devon Collier and Roberto Nelson scored 10 each. The young Beavers – who started one senior, two sophomores and two freshmen – have lost three in a row and nine of 11. Third-year coach Craig Robinson has beaten every other Pac-10 team, but he has an 0-6 lifetime record against the Bruins.
