Area wrestlers excel at Mat Classic

Deer Park won its fourth consecutive Washington State 2A wrestling championship Saturday night in Tacoma, outscoring Centralia after a slow start on Saturday. Mead ended up third in 4A, University was second in 2A, Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) was second in 1A and Reardan was third in B. Nobody was more impressive than Mead junior Jordan Rogers, who finished with a perfect season, with all but two of his 41 wins coming by pin. Rogers scored an 8-2 decision over James Souza of Emerald Ridge at 171 pounds for the title. Rogers’ brother Chandler, a freshman, had a shocking pin of Nico Moreno of Moses Lake midway through their 145-pound match that Chandler had been trailing. In the hotly contested 3A competition, University took second place.
