In brief: Spokane teenager dies in rollover on Highway 395

From Staff Reports

A 17-year-old Spokane boy died in a one-car rollover accident on Highway 395 in Clayton on Friday.

Johnathen M. Carwile was northbound in a Saturn SL2 shortly after 10 p.m. when his vehicle left the roadway on a curve and rolled, ejecting him.

Carwile died at the scene, the Washington State Patrol reported.

His passenger, Kaili L. Donica, 16, of Medical Lake, was taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center. She was wearing a seat belt, WSP said.

Police said they believe excessive speed and drugs or alcohol may have been factors in the crash.

Girl dies in crash; passenger injured

A teenage girl was killed early Saturday and another teenager seriously injured in a one-car crash near Soap Lake, Wash.

Grant County sheriff’s deputies responded to the crash about 5:49 a.m. The girl, who was not identified, was westbound on the 3000 block of County Road 20-NE when her vehicle left the roadway and struck a driveway culvert. She and her passenger, a 17-year-old boy, were ejected from the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

The girl was declared dead at the scene. The boy, whose name also was not released, was taken to Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake before being flown to a Spokane hospital with critical injuries.

Neither was wearing a seat belt, and investigators believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

Truck hits woman in crosswalk

A woman was in critical condition at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center after being hit by a truck while crossing a downtown street about 12:28 p.m. Saturday, police said.

The woman, who was not identified, suffered head injuries, but they are not life-threatening, said Officer Tim Moses of the Spokane Police Department.

The driver of the truck was turning south from Spokane Falls Boulevard onto Browne Street when, according to witnesses, he failed to yield and hit the woman in the crosswalk.

The driver, who was not identified, had not been cited as of Saturday afternoon, but Moses said he likely would be issued a citation.

Motorcyclist cited in rear-end crash

A Spokane man driving a motorcycle was injured after rear-ending a van about 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Coeur d’Alene.

Police said Anthony Yeaw, 23, was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he sped through traffic and rear-ended a Ford van driven by Wayne Bullington, 43, of Rathdrum, at 1500 Northwest Blvd. Yeaw was thrown from the motorcycle.

He was taken to Kootenai Medical Center where he was treated and released. Bullington was not injured.

Yeaw was cited for inattentive driving.
