Area men’s basketball: Whits KO Boxers

The Whitworth Pirates used a 19-2 run to start the second half and rolled to an 84-45 victory over the Pacific Boxers in a Northwest Conference regular-season finale on Saturday in Forest Grove, Ore.

The top-ranked Pirates (24-1, 15-1) set a school record for most wins during the regular season.

The win gave Pirates coach Jim Hayford his 250th win in his 12th season. He is 213-56 in his 10 seasons at Whitworth.

The Pirates’ Michael Taylor led all scorers with 25 points. Jack Loofburrow scored 15 and grabbed nine rebounds. David Riley and Wade Gebbers each finished with 14 points for Whitworth.

Carson Bartlett led the Boxers (4-21, 3-13) with 11 points, while LeMar Anglin scored 10 with a game-high 10 rebounds.

Whitworth will host Pacific Lutheran on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the NWC tourney.

CC Spokane 73, Columbia Basin 57: Chaz Johnson hit 9 of 11 free throws and buried four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points and the Sasquatch (18-7, 10-3) breezed to a victory over the Hawks (7-17, 4-9) in Pasco.

Taylor Pettersen added 12 points for CCS, while Danny Marshall chipped in with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Southern Idaho 76, North Idaho 70: Pierre Jackson scored 16 and Kenny Buckner controlled the boards with 15 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles to a victory over the Cardinals in Twin Falls.

Michael Hale III tossed in a game-high 22 points for the Cardinals. Idris Lasisi added 13 points and Tyrone White Jr. snagged 11 rebounds for NIC.

Southern Idaho had a decided 47-32 advantage on the boards.
