Rich class pulling away

I admit to being something of a news junkie. I listen to and read the writings of many economic and political analysts. Therefore, it was most gratifying to me to read businessman and legislator Andy Billig’s guest column in The Spokesman-Review (Feb. 19).

Mr. Billig made the most thoughtful, compassionate and sensible proposal about how legislators might go about balancing taxing and spending to the benefit of all citizens. Ever since the 1980s the middle and lower economic classes have lost ground and the top 1 percent has gained big time. Whenever this is pointed out there are those who accusingly cry “class warfare!” The specter of class warfare, among other factors, seems to have maintained the trend of the widening of the gap between the very rich and the rest of us.

Mr. Billig’s proposal is one of a good business practice and is one that could benefit all Americans. I wish every legislature in the country could read his column.
