Couple rescued after four days in forest road ditch

Associated Press

SEATTLE – A couple rescued four days after their SUV slid off a secluded forest road near Mount St. Helens said they spent their time playing cribbage, melting snow for water, and running the engine briefly to stay warm and save gas.

John and Patricia Norvell, of Vancouver, Wash., were rescued Friday when a group of campers spotted their Jeep Cherokee. They were about 30 miles from the nearest town and had no food except jelly beans.

The 63-year-olds went out for a drive on Monday but slid into a ditch on a one-lane road.

The campers used shovels and their trucks to pull the Norvells’ vehicle out of the ditch.
